If you have been accused of sexual assault you will have to appear in court to defend yourself. If you are not guilty you will enter a plea of "not guilty." The case will then proceed towards trial. The next step is often a preliminary hearing, where the prosecutor presents evidence to the judge to show that they have a case. If they do not have good evidence, the case will be dismissed. If there is evidence the case will be bound over to trial. At some point the prosecutor may be willing to accept a guilty plea to a lesser offense if the prosecutor's evidence is not strong, or just to avoid a trial.
