Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Utah
Death payments
My mother is about to die. She has no assets and has $150,000 in bills from loans etc. She refused to get life-insurance. I never got along with my mother and in her will said I would be responsible for her funeral costs since she does not like me. Can she do that? What can I do to prevent this from happening?

Re: Death payments
Your mother cannot make you responsible for her funeral costs, regardless of what she demands. These are expenses which she or her estate is liable for. If she has no money nor assets, and you and all other relatives refuse to pay for the funeral costs, then her funeral can be at the expense of the State. You may want to talk to your family to get an agreement on what kind of funeral you are all willing to cover. Contact a funeral home for some cheap options.
