my father-in-law who is divorced just passed away after being in the hospital for 3 weeks, are my wife(who is the oldest child of two) and I, responsible for my father-n-laws medical bills

Only your father-in-law's estate is responsible for his bills. This means that, if he left any assets behind, they must be used to pay his bills before being distributed to his heirs. If he has more debts than assets, pay his creditors on a pro rata basis, and tell them that is all he has.
