Typically some time after the funeral one or more of the relatives will file in court to open probate. At that time the original will is deposited with the court. A personal representative (executor) is selected by the court. If only one person files, the PR is officially named within a week or two. Then the PR gathers the debts and assets of the deceased and makes the necessary arrangements for the payment of expenses and distributions of assets. Depending on the size of the estate this can happen within a few weeks to several months or even years.
