What is the purpose of a Personal Representative in a will? Is it necessary to name one?

The Personal Representative is an updated term for an "executor" of a will. So, yes, you would want to name one as they will be the person responsible for administering your estate. If you do not name one, the court will most likely appoint one when the will is probated.
