Legal Question in Family Law in Vermont
gay marriage/divorce, in different states
my sister has just informed me that her and her girlfriend plan on getting married in vermount. So, I was wondering if there marriage is legal in Vermount will it also be legal in Virginia. also do they have to get a legal divorce and what would her spouse be entitled to? And if my sister died would the state of Virginia recognize her marriage to her spouse as far as personal property?

Re: gay marriage/divorce, in different states
If this is a prospective homosexual union which you're referring to, my information is that the state of Vermont does recognize "civil unions", between such individuals but not marriage----at least not yet.
The Commonwealth of Virginia recognizes neither homosexual civil unions nor gay marriages so anything your sister did in Vermont with respect to these matters would have no validity and would stand unrecognized in Virginia, and would have no effect on her current matrimonial status in Virginia, except, perhaps, providing her current spouse, if she has one, with fault grounds for immediate divorce.
