Legal Question in Disability Law in Virginia

Can you still work up until your private insurance disability application is approved or do you need to be removed from work by your doctor first? I just learned I had bipolar 2 and an anxiety disorder after having a 2 week depressive episode 2 months ago. I've gotten the paperwork filled out from my psychiatrist, hr and myself. Thank you very much for your help...
