Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Virginia

Collection agency attempting to collect a 24 yr old debt

I was contacted by mail two days ago by a collection agency attempting to collect a debt that was charged off 24 yrs ago in a personal bankruptcy. This was apparently a credit card debt from a bank I do not recognize and to be sure I will have to obtain copies of the bankruptcy papers which are filed in another state. The bankruptcy occurred in Virginia in 1980.

Can they do this? What do I need to do to protect myself?

Get copies of your discharge and your list of creditors, forward it to the collector. Ask them their full name and direct line number. Tell them if they call you back, you'll have someone seek sanctions in the US Bankruptcy Court against them.

Good Luck.
