Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia

I had my car towed to an auto repair shop to be assessed for why it was not starting. I asked to be informed of what the problem was after the assessment. I was told the starter had shorted the ignition belt and would be around $700 less the towing and the labor. I was left a voicemail saying the car was fixed. The tow was $55. The total price was $1472. I did not authorize this legally am I right? What can I require them to do at this point?

If you can prove by a preponderance of the evidence that you never properly authorized

the alleged repair as described, then you cannot be legally forced to pay for it. However, as a practical

matter you would be well advised to determine whether you can settle this situation by

negotiating a substantially lower amount with this shop in order to get the vehicle released from

its custody.

But if the shop refuses all such offers, then you're remaining remedy is likely to involve filing a warrant in detinue in the local general district court against this shop for the return of your property.
