Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia

No certification obtained-No Job

I have been in a position for 4 years now and am now being told by my employer that I need to obtain a certification because other people, who have been promised additional monies, have obtained the certification. I am being told that I have one year to obtain the certification and I have to pay out of my pocket for the certification. If I do not get the certification, I will be terminated. Can the employer do this?

Re: No certification obtained-No Job

Virginia is a very business-friendly State.

That means that an employer can fire you at will

for any reason, or for no reason at all.

As long as they do not treat someone differently

based on sex, race, or religion, they can change

your employment any way they want.

Your best option is to spend the next year finding

a better job where they treat you better. You

probably should get the certification simply to

make yourself more valuable. But if that company

does not reat you well, start looking for a better one.
