Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia

confirm 501 3c of an organization

I am assisting a friend with Public Relations and promoting a charity event that takes place in January. All proceeds are to go a charity organization - ''Under the Star International''.

How do I know that the organization is really a 501 3C?

What happens if the organization is NOT a 501 3C and money is collected?

I do not want to be caught up in any improprieties.

I want to be clear for my own sake that everything is appropriate.

You can look up the company information on the Secretary of State website in the state where they are incorporated and/or do business.
