One social benefit of contingent fee arrangements is that people of modest means can be represented by an attorney in court, for example if they are injured as a result of someone else's negligence. The attorney is wagering that he or she will earn a fee sufficient to pay for the work performed on the case -- and for the work performed on the attorney's other contingent fee cases that were lost.
