Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia

when to get a copyright?

I have a lot of creative writing and copy writing that I want to copyright. I may edit some of my writing later. Should I copyright what I have or do it later. If I copyright now and want to edit information later will I have to copyright it again or can I update the copyright. Thank you.

Re: when to get a copyright?

Under current copyright law, all of your works are already protected as soon as they became fixed in a tangible form or medium of expression.

This would also apply to any subsequent edited versions of these works.

If you wanted to formally register them as used to be required prior to January 1, 1978, you could do so, but

this would only be necessary in the event that you were to become involved in a lawsuit for copyright infringement

of these particular works of your original authorship.
