Equine

Hello, we own an equine board and training facility in VA. An owner wants to remove her horse without paying her bill. What are our options? What lien can we put on the horse?

May depend on what the contract says about it, if anything. You may need to file suit for the money.

I see no reason as to why you should release this horse without its owner first paying the bill for its care and shelter in full.

Re: Equine

The Virginia Code provides for a lien for livery stables (boarding facilities) for unpaid board bills. You should not agree to release the horse until such amount is paid; the lien gives you certain rights, including right to sell the animal to pay the board bill. (Also note: it is a misdemeanor for the horse to be removed by the owner without paying the bill, if you have such a lien on the horse.
