Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia
My father passed away and I am his legal personal representative. He is owed money and I have drawn up paper work made deadlines and the money was not paid. I live in VA, my father lived in HI and the person who owes lives in AK-- does it matter where I file suit? And how do I go about filing suit-- contacting a lawyer?

Contact an attorney for advice. If there is a written contract for the debt, that may specify the proper venue. If not, you will need to consult with an attorney in your area for specific advice.

I would be happy to review the contract document to help you determine the best course of action, in a no charge consultation.
It is likely an action will need to be brought in Alaska, unless the contract provides/allows otherwise.
If the amount is substantial, you may wish to hire experienced business counsel to assist with the collection of the amount due.
The original paperwork creating the debt may speak to where to bring suit. You will need to consult an attorney on that issue. It would be important, if it is possible, to get the case into a Federal Court, rather than a state court; a Federal Court judgment would be good in all Federal jurisdictions.
