Legal Question in Business Law in Virginia

What makes a agreement legally binding?

We are in a process of a legal proceeding towards a business related settlement. Our attorney signed an agreement with the other side attorney. He did not receive the countersigned agreement back from the other attorney for 2 weeks. We hired a another attorney and declared it null and void. Was it a legally binding agreement. Moreover as clients we did not agree to our lawyer to sign that contract. He was compromising.

Re: What makes a agreement legally binding?

Why not ask your current counsel of record who has apparently now stepped into the "representational shoes", so to speak, of your first attorney? (If the latter was authorized to sign the agreement in your behalf, it should be obvious that it's binding upon you, compromising though it may have been.)_
