Payment work done.

As an architect how do I recoupe fees for plans and drawings supplied to a client for a proposed project that has been on hold for almost 1 year because of the client trying to get funding for the project? This is for additional work and drawings, over and above what our original proposal was for, which were requested by the client in order to get city approval. In keeping with the proposal format the extra fees are resonable and fair for the extra work requested. It is my understanding that this client has paid others for their partisapation in this project, but keeps asking me to give them another month and so on. I have been informed that the client is now trying to sell the property on which the proposed project was to be built, so I would like to be paid or insure that I will be paid. This is also not the first bill sent to the client, but the only one the client has put off paying.

It sounds like reasoning with the client has been exhausted. It may just be time to get an attorney and file a lawsuit. Is it a lot of money involved? It is a shame that so many people just never do anything about money that is owed to them. I am amazed at how many people I run into who never did anything about money people owed them. Sometimes people wait until it is too late (more than 3 years on an oral contract is too late).
