Starting a clothing company
i am looking at starting a small to medium sized clothing company. i have a name I want to use, and need to know exactly what things I need to file with the state and Fed government to be able to create my company, copyright my name and establish an company type.

It sounds like you need to incorporate or start an LLC, and then register your trademark with either VA or the USPTO (organization that governs federal trademarks).
For your business entity formation, the process is fairly simply, but you will need to devote some time to this. Assuming you want the entity formed in Virginia, start with this website: http://www.scc.virginia.gov/clk/begin.aspx
