wrongful demotion/pay cut
27 years with same company, never been written up or performance warnings given, no developmental plans, then demoted last week and pay cut

Unfortunately, unless you were under an employment contract that made guarantees regarding responsibilities or pay amounts or some other similar agreement, you are probably an at-will employee. This means either you can quit or your employer can fire you (or demote you) for most any reason or no reason at all. In order to recover any damages against them, you would need to show that your employer has violated state or federal law in demoting you, such as making this change because of your race, sex or disability.
