Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Virginia

Class U Felony obtain money/etc False pretense, larcery =$200

I am facing this Class U Charge 18.2-178 in the state of Virginia.

I didn't do it and though that the police officer knew that and then all the sudden yesterday - I meet with the officer and he throws this at me ... I was released on a Recogniance of $2500 of course to promise not to get in trouble and show up at the first court date. Anyways, the person that brought the charge againist me dropped it but I was told that because it already was at the DA's office they have to charge me with something. The officer told me that he doesn't think that it would stick but.. you know how that goes. I have NEVER been in trouble and this charge is a complete bogus charge..What am I facing as far as a possible sentence??? by the way I was finger printed and mug shot and was never told yesterday that I was being arrested..so was I technically arrested or not??? I am very confused??

The "U" designation for this offense signifies that the charging authorities for the time being are not sure as to the proper classification for

your alleged offense; probably, something less than the Class 4 which is officially attached to Sec. 18.2-178.

As to the kind of sentence which you may be facing if convicted of this alleged offense, this is a question, among numerous others, which you should take up with your defense counsel which hopefully you will have on board before another week passes.
