Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Virginia

Is it considered unlawful to use profanity in a public place. Many time I have heard others in a restaurant setting, inside and outside public buildings, and in other such locations using profanity. I have witnessed police officers, judges and public servants in and out of court, using profanity.

Also, movies we watch at the theatre and so forth. It is a question that I have pondered but, not asked until now.

Sincerely,

Marc Dimone

I suppose it could be a breach of the peace and/or disorderly conduct and/or a possible curse and abuse scenario, but it would likely depend on what language is used and the context when considering whether it is actually profane in view of the statutes. Movie theatres and restaurants will not tolerate cursing or anything else that might hurt business and many Judges will not tolerate it in court.
