Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Virginia

married but seperated financial obligations

I have been married since 1989 but seperated for 4 years. My husband is currently in critical care and in a coma. Can the hospital hold me legally responsible for the financial obligation of medical bills since we are still legally married? Can I be held responsible for debt that was incuured by my husband during the 4 years we have lived apart even though my name is not attached to it?

Re: married but seperated financial obligations

As a married couple one half of your assets may be used to support your spouse. If you signed any admissions' papers to the hospital, then you may be responsible for the bills. You would also be responsible for any debts contracted on joint accounts. If your name does not appear on any of the debts, then you should not be responsible, but you would need to see all copies of that paperwork to be sure.
