Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Virginia

Slander or Libel

Is it legal to post true statements about someone online or in the newspaper, as long as you have proof. Regarding abuse, even though there are police reports and audio tapes, the courts prefer to believe the abuser's lies instead of proof. The abused is losing custody and wants to threaten the abuser with exposure if she will not accept mediation, but wants to know if he can legally follow through on this without being sued for libel or slander.
