Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Virginia

Slander

I had been asking a woman who thought about going in to business with me to remove her pocessions from my shop. After several requests for her to do so she kept coming u pwith excuses why she couldn't pick her things up which caused me to not be able to have a grand opening I planned for October 20th since her things were piled everywhere. . Finally after repeated requests she sent her husband to pick up ONE item and he left the door wide opened (during non-business hours). While I don't believe he did this to be spiteful I was concerned and reallized I needed to do something. I told the woman to remove her things by a certain date and she kept coming up with excuses why she wasn't able to. Last Sunday I sent her an email and I told her her pocessions would be set out front on Monday by noon which I ended up doing. She managed to get her things back however is now going to local shop owners and telling them that I am nuts. I had no contract with this person and took every care when removing her things-covering with plastic, careful not to nick or scratch. Not only could her statement harm my reputation but it could also harm my business. Is this slander?

Re: Slander

Slanderous, yes, in a technical sense, but not yet sufficiently so to be actionable as a practical matter(in my opinion).
