Xboyfriend wants payment for car

X purchased me a car when we were living together over 2 years ago. We had no written agreement. We are no longer together and he wants me to pay him back. Does he have a case without a written agreement?

If the car was intended as a gift to you from this ex boyfriend, you are not now legally obligated to now pay him for this gift. However, if the car was purchased for you with money intended merely as a loan to you, then you are obligated to pay this ex boyfriend back, irrespective of whether the agreement was in writing or merely verbal.
