Legal Question in Construction Law in Virginia
I have been invoiced for work not even started
I had a contractor come out to give me an estimate to repair some plumbing, my mother in law signed a document she believed to be an estimate but it says ''job invoice'' at the top. The contractor was supposed to come back out tommorrow. I called to cancel and now he is threatening to sue if I dont pay him the full amount. There is no contract.

So, tell him that there is no contract since there was no "meeting of the proverbial minds"(between you and him), and that you yourself signed nothing and never intended to have anything more from the contractor than an estimate, which is what your mother-in-law thought that she was signing (although such documents are not normally signed by prospective purchasers of goods or services).
