Auto repair bill $6000 more than oral estimate/no written agreement

Body shop technician said repair would be no more than $16,000. Work begun. No written agreement. Technician leaves body shop employment for other work. Body shop boss now says car bill will be $22,000. In interim Car owner obtained from insurance company to new premium advice for car value increased by $16,000.(ie some evidence that car owner is truthful)

I believe that under the Virginia Consumer Protection Act and/or related statutes that the car repair shop was required to provide you with a written estimate of the repair cost and if it exceeded that estimate by a certain amount, then the shop was required to obtain your approval for the higher amount before proceeding with the repair work.

If the repair facility has failed to comply with the above requirement then they are in violation of the above referenced statute(s) and you would have a basis to bring a lawsuit against them for your damages.
