Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia

Buying a boat in Virginia

I am from Ohio and I am buying a boat from an individual in Virginia. It will be titled in Ohio. Do i need to do more than write him a check and write ''purchase of (name of) boat'' in the memo of the check? Do i need a bill of sale? Does it need to be notarized? Or does he just fill out the title on the back of the title, and does that have to be notarized?

Re: Buying a boat in Virginia

It all comes down(in my opinion) to how much of a record you would like to make of this particular purchase of the boat, i.e, the seller merely signing the back of the title in return for you writing your check to him for the sale amount(with memo or no memo) or something more elaborate which might include a bill of sale (notarized or not), in addition to the other items. (Of course, in the unlikely event that the seller were offering some kind of warranty for this presumably used craft, you would want to have that memoralized in writing.)

Otherwise, under the relevant law of the Commonwealth, there are no set nor particularized requirements for this type of transaction(as far as I know).
