Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia

My car was booted and towed for property tax. I came up with the funds and paid the personal property tax and the vehicle was released to me. The next day, my vehicle was repossessed from my home by a recovery company from citifinacial auto. I called cifinancial who after numerous calls admitted that yes the taxes have been paid. I now am having difficulty getting my vehicle released from the recovery company located in Md. They are awaiting release from the auto finance. What are my options? After the recovery company was told by the city tax office that the taxes were paid, did they have a right to repossess the car anyway?

If the repo outfit had a valid order to seize and tow your vehicle, very likely it did (have such a right).
