Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia
I had my car towed to a garage after the transmission went out. They told me they couldn't start on repairs until I gave them $1000 up front for for the transmission and that it would be an additional $500 for labor. Since I couldn't come up with that amount I made arrangements to buy another car on instalments and sell my car to someone else. When that someone else went to pick up my car the garage was already in the process of putting in a transmission. Now they want $1500. I had left them two phone numbers and they didn't call me before starting work. Any advice?

Well, did you sign written authorization for the transmission work
or not? If not, was it make explicitly clear that someone there in the
shop with the proper authority must contact you before proceeding with
the work?
If your answers to the above questions are no and yes, then you
are probably not legally liable for the debt claimed by the shop and the
new owner will probably have to settle with the shop on some compromised amount in order to get the vehicle released.
