Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia

how to get out of contract

I signed a contract for a martial art school to pay 8000$ over 3 years to get my black belt, started last June, took lessons for 2 month and realised that I am not learning what was verbaly promised.Have not attended classes since July but I have been paying. There is no clause in the contract to terminate it, I pay my money to a bank not to the martial arts school. The owner of the school says, you signed the contract now you pay wether you come to class or not. I need help, what kind of lawyer do I need for this, where do I find a lawyer? Do I even have a chance to get out of this contract? Before I signed ( I am in the military) I ask what if I am assignt to a new duty station will you let me out of the contract, he said no problem. All the promises, all verbal, I have nothing in writing, besides the contract with a bank over a loan of allmost 8000$.

Re: how to get out of contract

These martial arts schools are gaining ever increasing notoriety for these kinds of unconscionable contracts accompanied by the kind of attitude on the part of the owners which you've described i.e., "You gonna pay no matter what."

You should arrange a consultation with an attorney who is knowledgeable in the areas of contract and consumer

law to review the contract and related facts and who should be able to advise you, accordingly. (There may be a way to utilize the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act to your advantage in this situation.)
