Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia

Hotel Cancellation Gone Wrong

I booked 3 nights for 2 people at hotel using a conference low rate. The stipulation using this lower rate was that if cancellations needed to be done we do so 14 days before check in. I called in well before that time limit and spoke to someone with limited English. I asked to be transfered without luck. I think they cancelled someone else's reservation and now the hotel is trying to charge me $1500 for the entire stay. I called and they aren't showing a record of it. Why am I getting penalized for their mistake?? I'm floored that this is how they do business. Suggestions??

I am in Virginia and the hotel is located in Mass.

Re: Hotel Cancellation Gone Wrong

You should write a letter to the hotel management

spelling out all the details of your attempt to cancel this reservation and let them know that you will vigorously oppose any attempts on their part to charge your credit card for this sevice that was timely cancelled.

If this is a large hotel chain, a copy of the letter should also be sent to the CEO or others

in the top echelon of management. (And, if your card is still charged, then you will need to submit a statement in writing to your card issuer that you are formally putting the matter in contest.)
