Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia
My Laptop
My husband and I took a laptop to a shop for repairing about 4 weeks ago. They found out needed new motherboard and gave us 2 options. First, they could try to fix without the new part, cost about 350 and in 2 weeks, but not gaurantee. Second, order the new part, 450 to 500 and in 3 DAYS, and 100% working condition. We decided option #2. After 1WEEK, we called them back and found out they had not ordered the new part yet. He gave us whatever his excuse and promised he would take care of it right away. Another week went by, we called him back AGAIN. He told us he got the new part but it wasn't the right one. He apologized and told us what he can do. We didn't want to have any business with him anymore, so we told him we wanted it back. After we came home with laptop, we've noticed some parts were missing such as 2GB memory that we just put into (still have reciept) and other parts too. We've called and confronted abou it. He knew some parts were missing, and also told us that he sent the laptop to someone else to fix it. He WILL contact them about the missing PARTS. He even told us that it was MOO point to get back parts (PJ)because when we change new motherboard, it'll be whole new one. What should we do? too much to bear...

Re: My Laptop
It would seem that neither one of the options you were apparently offered were in fact worth pursuing
in view of the fact that these days a new quality laptop with 2GB RAM, 150GB hard drive, with high speed processor and Windows Vista Premium with Service Pack 1 can be acquired for around $500 (after rebates).
I would tell the repair shop that you don't want their new motherboard; that you want the return of all of the missing parts of the computer which you left in their care and for which they are responsible for using reasonable care as a bailee for hire, and that if such is not soon forthcoming, that you will have no alternative but to bring suit against the business in small claims court for your damages.
Then take whatever monies that you may realize from this unwholesome affair and go down to Best Buy or Office Depot and buy yourselves a new laptop.
