Am I liable?
I sold an old car to someone,
He just called and said he was going to sue me because it broke down on him, can he do that?

No, unless you comitted fraud or the equivalent misrepresentation in the transaction.
Such private auto sales are generally regarded in the law as "as is" sale transactions without warranty or guarantee of any kind.
