Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia
My organization sponsored a sporting event at which sporting equipment vendors were allowed to sell and repair equipment during the course of the event, No fee was charged to the vendors for participation and the organization did not promote or endorse any of the vendors.\n\nA participant had a piece of equipment repaired by one of the vendors and is now claiming that the vendor damaged his equipment and he had to have the factory replace the damaged part. Of course we have received a certified letter from the participant advising that legal action will be taken against the vendor, host club and state association if his repair expenses are not repaid to his satisfaction. The proported value of the replacement is about $5000. \n\nThe event was held in Virginia, the participant is from North Carolina and the vendor is from Alabama, if that has any bearing on the matter.\n\nDo the host club and state association have any liability in this matter?

Your organization's mere sponsorship of the event described would be unlikely to be sufficent
to make it responsible for the torts(civil wrongs) of the individual vendors who participated in it(in my opinion).
If anyone is liable for this repair that apparently went wrong, it would likely be limited to the individual vendor who allegedly botched the job.
