Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia

I received a phone call a few weeks back from a company that I no longer wanted services with. The sales rep on the phone said they wanted to update my information and needed my address and such. After specifically asking if I would be charged, he said no, and I gave my info. He said he had to record part of the conversation and I said that was fine. He went very quickly through a terms of service, and I can't recall if I interjected about charges or not. Either way, they've charged my account when I said I did not want to renew. I was wondering if this is legal.

So, ask this company for a refund, and if you paid with a credit card, inform your card issuer in writing that you are contesting this charge for the reason that you apparently never specifically approved it.
