Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia
Requiring Driver's License Number on Checks
If I write a check for my transaction that already contains my full name, address, and phone number, and the retailer requests my driver's license number to be written on the check and I refuse, can they legally refuse to accept my check as payment for the merchandise? Also, their ''policy'' requiring a driver's license number was not posted.

Re: Requiring Driver's License Number on Checks
You would likely be right to refuse giving your SSN or other information unless that is otherwise required to complete the transaction. But of course, they may still refuse payment whether the policy is "posted" or not. I suppose you could just pay cash or by other acceptable legal tender.
