If you sell an item such as a used washing machine to someone are you liable if the machine floods their house or ruins their clothes.

No, such household items are generally sold AS IS without warranty or guaranty of any kind and the buyer of such items uses them at his or her own risk.

No implied warranties arise in a sale of used goods by a private seller. However, liability would arise where the terms of the contract expressly warranted the product.
