Legal Question in Consumer Law in Virginia
Vehicle Title and Tax
I sold a car a few months ago and
now I cannot get the title because
my old lien holder misplaced it, and
the state in which I purchased the
car has put a hold on it due to taxes.
Now the new owner is threatening to
sue me. What can I do? I do not
have $3000 to pay the taxes and
fines that I was not aware of paying
in the first place. Having been in the
military at the time I purchased the
car, I was not aware of the sales tax.

Re: Vehicle Title and Tax
Looks like you're facing the proverbial Hobson's choice, which in this case apparently means either paying up the taxes/penalties so that a duplicate title can be issued or defending a likely lawsuit brought by the irate buyer----which you are obviously likely to lose.
