Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

I was sent a check from my insurance company and cashed it and now a body shop send me a letter saying that they are going to use VA Code Section 8.01-27.2 to try to recoup money from me. I looked up this code and it is for recovery of a bad check for insufficient funds and I never wrote them a check so how could they use this code to come after me for a bad check? If this is the wrong code is there another code that they could use? When I received the check there was nothing that said the payment wasnt for me and was for the body shop.

That code section would not be applicable, but if you kept the money and didn't pay the body shop, you still owe them and they can sue you for the work they did.
