Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

City Taxes

I recently received a summons to small claims court in a city I used to live in 2002. They stated that in that year there was a technical error and the treasurer didn't bill for taxes. This is the first I've heard of it and it has accrued over $200 in penalties and interest. They also won't send me any documentation stating that any attempt to collect was made before. I have no problem paying my taxes owed, but I don't think it's right to have to pay all those penalties. What can I do?

Re: City Taxes

Go to court and tell your side of it to the judge and request any relief which you think is appropriate which obviously might be the elimination of the penalties and interest.
