Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia
Client emailed me saying that a stop payment was done to my check after my invoice for services was approved and check received.
Is this Legal? I performed the service, sent all files and docs, sent the invoice and the client paid.
Now she is telling me that she stopped payment and will send another amount based on what she thinks I deserve, since she had given me a bonus (I have emails stating that amount was a bonus for all extra work on prior month and after submitting invoice for that month, she paid the full amount), wants to deduct it from the initial invoice payment and not for the amount verbally agreed or the hours I submitted as worked. Can I sue in VA and is it against the law to stop payment in this case? Client is foul mouthed and continues to harass me and is trying to find ways to get out of any payments.

Yes, you can sue(small claims court, preferably) and, no, stop payment
orders on a check are not illegal in the circumstance you've described.
