collection of a debt

do i have to pay before i have written documentation. i do not know who the collection person except who he says he is by phone. i have gotten no notice from the people he is collecting from. what are my wrights.

You might demand his name, address, phone, who is he is collecting for, etc. His number may be on caller id. You should not pay anything without proper documenation and proof of a valid debt. After you have the address, demand verification of the debt in writing. If you need to file suit under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, consult an attorney that does those cases. Keep a diary on everything that happens.
