Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Collector demanding payment on biz acct

Years ago, I worked for AT&T. I had a test account that I would use when we deployed new products. I received a letter saying I owe $600 on this account from 2003. I wrote them to explain this was a business account, but they are still pursuing me. They say I have to get a letter from AT&T releasing me from the debt. The problem is that AT&T is no longer around. I hate that this is affecting my credit score. What can I do? Is the burden on them to prove I owe this debt?

Yes, the burden is on the debt collector to prove that the debt is owed by the one whom they are pursuing in order to collect it.

However, I believe that you are mistaken in your assertion that "AT&T is no longer around." This iconic corporation is still very much around, apparently, as a subsidiary of Cingular as both my mobile phone as well as DSL services are still being provided by AT&T.(You can also access the AT&T World Service Web Site online.)

There should be a way for you to contact the AT&T HR department in order to secure the verification which this collection agency claims to be seeking to release you from their pursuit.
