Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

A company who bought my account with circuit city told me last week if I do not settle now the company will take their suit to the government and ruin my credit for 12-15 years. I will not be able to buy anything for 12-15 years. Can they do that?

They can certainly try, but they had no business telling you that. In my experience, they often can not prove the debt, a valid assignment to them from Circuit City, etc. You might consider consulting an attorney. Good luck.

Sounds like they're blowin' smoke to me.

Not only are they blowing smoke, they are violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, and you may now be able to sue THEM for damages.
