Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia
Credit card refunds
I recently closed one of my credit card accounts and a week later the company sent me a refund check for $2500.00. Four weeks later they sent me a statement saying they made an error and sent me a bill on the credit card account that I had closed, I did not authorize them to reopen my account. So what do you think I should do?

Re: Credit card refunds
You want to keep the money, right? But they really did make a mistake, and you really weren't entitled to the money, right?
In theory, you've got some legal authority on your side, but they've got some equitable authority on their side. It really wasn't a gift, a bonus, or a bona-fide refund. So they're going to get it back if they go to court, and that's about all there is going to be to that.
As to their "re-opening" your account, they will argue it was never closed, because they gave you a cash advance. I wouldn't want to get into a struggle over a few buck in interest and so forth. So if you really don't have a legitimate claim to the money, send it back, toute de suite.
If it really was your money because of overpayments or such, then send them a letter telling them they've got a billing error to correct, in writing, within 60 days, copy for yourself, proof of delivery requested to the usps.
