electric bill in deceased father in laws name

my father inlaw lived with me and my husband and he is now deceased. he left behind a $3000 electric bill in his name. we are now trying to get service through this company and the lady there will not allow us to until this bill is paid.the account was not in our name at all, she just knows he lived there with us. Can she deny us service when the account was not in our name

If you in fact lived in the house with your father in law and received the benefit of the utilities, you will have to pay the unpaid bill

before you can get service in your own name.

I am not sure how this works. Was this the same residence? If yes, then what they would be able to say is that you used the electrictiy along with him.

They could say that becuase you benefited from the electric use, tehrefore you should pay for it.

If this was a separate section, then you will easily win if it goes to court.

You might need to file a declaratory judgment action to force them to restore service.
