garnishment of wages

can 25% of my wages be taken if i

won't have enough left to pay rent and

my other bills and groceries? i also have

my 2 grandchildren living with me, ages

8 and 13

Virginia law permits the wages of a judgment debtor to be garnished at a rate of 25% of the debtor's net salary which is what normally remains after all other mandatory deductions under state and federal law.

Given your current straitened circumstances, it

would seem advisable for you to contact this creditor to see whether some kind of arrangement could be worked out for you to pay less than the amount that is apparently now coming out of your wages.
