how can someone garnish your wages if no legal document is present.

What do you mean by legal document? Do you mean no court order?

Garnishments must be issued out of a court of proper jurisdiction to the garnishee(usually the debtor's employer)and a copy must be served upon the debtor himself, giving him proper notice. If such did not happen in your case, you may have a basis to contest the garnishment.
