Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Home Security Contract Law

I recently moved after having notified my home security systems monitoring provider that we would need to cancel our contract and they are trying to bill us for the entire year of service based on a contract signed over 10-years ago when we moved in to the home. They have not been willing to settle with us and have turned the matter over to a law office for collection. It isn't a terribly lot of money, less than $300, so our objections are really based on principle in that we proactively notified them of the move and requested service be discontinued so aren't receiving the services. Should we pay?

Re: Home Security Contract Law

Depends on what your contract says. After the initial term the contract might have gone month to month or year to year. Read the contract to see what it says about what happens after the initial term.
